Painting Clouds and Skies in Watercolor

What you will learn

In this course, I will show you basic techniques for sketching clouds and the sky in watercolor. We will explore quick cloud sketching techniques for watercolor, learn a bit about cloud anatomy, how you can use different pigments and mixes for the sky and cloud shadows, and I will demonstrate step by step how I paint different clouds. We'll also take a look at other techniques for sketching clouds on the spot, like wax resist or gouache.

The course is perfect for beginners and intermediate sketchers and watercolorists, and anyone who wants to include more detailed clouds.

Materials and resources

A basic watercolor palette*, round brush (approx. size 4 and 8, I use synthetics), a 1/2 inch flat brush, cotton watercolor paper (cold-pressed), painting rag/paper towel, optional: gouache white, piece of wax candle

*The palette should at least have a cool and warm version of yellow, red and blue, and yellow ochre and burnt sienna for mixing. I'll paint with Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine in the course. Most basic palettes will be fine!
